History of the Root Beer Float
Do you know the history of the root beer float?
I didn’t know either until I stumbled upon the National Day Calendar.
“Also known as the “Black Cow,” the root beer float got its start in Colorado in a mining camp. Frank J. Wisner of Cripple Creek, Colorado, gets the credit for inventing the “Black Cow” way back in August of 1893.
One night Wisner, owner of the Cripple Creek Cow Mountain Gold Mining Company, was staring out the window and thinking about the line of soda waters he was producing for the citizens of Cripple Creek when he came upon an idea. The full moon that night shined on the snow-capped Cow Mountain and reminded him of a scoop of vanilla ice cream. He hurried back to his bar and scooped a spoonful of ice cream into the children’s favorite flavor of soda, Myers Avenue Red Root Beer. After trying, he liked it and served it the very next day. It was an immediate hit.
Wisner named the new creation, “Black Cow Mountain” but the local children shortened the name to “Black Cow”.
By the way, National Root Beer Float Day is August 6th!
So, between Black Cow Day and Root Beer Float Day, there are two days you have every reason to enjoy this frothy concoction.
Very Easy to Make
It was super simple to make.
I used fat free vanilla ice cream but you can also use frozen yogurt.
The chocolate added to the root beer, along with the creamy ice cream, made it taste like a chocolate soda.
It really was good!
My son drank one too.
Shhhh, I didn’t tell him it was a diet root beer and fat free ice cream!

But if you’re just making it for yourself, just know that you will have a little bit of root beer leftover in your bottle.
In addition, you can totally change the soda and ice cream flavors to your liking.
Chocolate-Cherry and Banana-Fudge would also be delicious.
And don’t forget the straws!
This recipe would be great to make for a kids birthday party or a fun pool party!
So, next time you have a hankerin’ for a refreshing, frothy treat, try out this recipe.
I know you’ll love it as much as I did.
And, by all means, mark your calendar to drink a root beer float AND a Black Cow on June 10th and August 6th.
